Briefly Elsewhere
I was waiting for my mom to finish shopping at the garden shop, so I sat on a bench and drifted to somewhere not on this earth.
I thought about how pretty her new apple trees would look planted in the yard and how nice it would be to hide from the beating sun under one and read, grabbing a fresh honey crisp when I got hungry for a snack.
I watched some bugs run around on the cement, in a hurry to get somewhere and thought about how they all had their own little lives and jobs and needs. One Mr. Bug was especially in a hurry, and I’d hoped he wasn’t late for a meeting.
I listened to the low, full-bodied melodic tunes of the wind chimes across the greenhouse. I realized the wind was making a song that had never been written, with no memories or repetitions just for me.
I noticed all the beautifully crafted glass hanging ornaments strung from the ceilings of the barn, and how the sun caught a turquoise crystal swaying in the wind
I observed a bird taking a bath in one of the colorful bird baths for sale, and I imagined she was getting ready for a date with her bird boyfriend, and I wondered where they were going for dinner.
I smelled the fresh aromatic scents of the eucalyptus tree that must be somewhere near me, and I wondered if it knew how much delight it brought me. Maybe I should go tell it thank you.
I snapped back to earth when I felt my phone buzzing, my mom was calling me to tell me it’s time to leave. I realized I hadn’t checked my phone this entire time.
